Falcons Head To Terre Haute

Cross country teams to run in Saturday's NCAA Great Lakes Regional at Indiana State.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams will head to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 2001 NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Saturday (Nov. 10) event, hosted by Indiana State University, will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course.

The men's race, 10,000 meters in length, is scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m. EDT. The women's 6K race is set for a 12:15 p.m. EDT start.

The BGSU men's team is coming off an eighth-place finish at the MAC Championships (Oct. 27). Senior Tom Kutter placed 12th in that race to earn All-MAC Second-Team honors. Kutter has been BGSU's top finisher in three of the five races in which he has competed this season.

Sophomore Justin Perez, the Falcons' top finisher in a pair of races this fall, was BGSU's second runner to cross the line at the league championship. In addition to Kutter and Perez, senior Chad Kunkle, juniors Andy Artiaga and Dave Larson, sophomore Philip King and freshman Grant Shadden will make the trip to the regional meet.

On the women's side, a youthful BGSU squad looks to rebound from a 12th-place finish at the league meet. Junior Joy Echler has been the team's top finisher in all six races this season. She placed 26th among individuals at the MAC Championships.

In addition to Echler, senior Sarah Lohrbach, juniors Cyndi Bostorff and Christy Paine, sophomore Amber Culp and freshmen Elise Gould and Melissa Krueger are scheduled to make the trip to Terre Haute.

The LaVern Gibson Championship Course is located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, approximately 10 miles east of Terre Haute. The top two teams, as well as the top four individuals not on one of those teams (providing they finish in the top 25) will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship, which will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, at Furman University.

On Monday (Nov. 12), the Division I Cross Country Committee will select 13 at-large teams and two at-large individuals from the NCAA's nine regions. A total of 31 teams and 38 individuals will qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships.
