Spencer Schmitz is entering his second stint as a volunteer assistant coach for his alma mater as he returns to BGSU where he served in the same capacity during the 2005 season. Schmitz, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio and former Falcon player returns after serving as an assistant coach at Longwood University during the 2006-07 season. He helped lead the Lancers to a 34-19 record, as he served on a coaching staff that includes current Falcon coach Rick Blanc. The Lancers as a team batted .313 for the season, as they drove in 277 runs and stold 88 total bases, collecting 137 total extra-base hits. Prior to coaching at Longwood, Schmitz held the top assistant position at Bowling Green High School during the spring of 2006, prior to serving as the assistant general manager and top assistant for the Lake Erie Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Baseball League. Schmitz, the son of BG head coach Danny Schmitz, was a four-year second baseman and designated hitter for the Falcons (2001-04). In 2002 he was named the team's most improved player as he helped BG capture the MAC championship for the second-straight season. He was also selected to the All-MAC Academic Team in 2001. Other coaching experiences for Schmitz include serving as an assistant coach for the Whitehouse Legion team out of Whitehouse, Ohio in 2004, serving as a volunteer coach for the BGSU hockey team (2004-06) and serving as an assistant for the Bowling Green High School hockey team (2002-04). A 2004 BGSU alum, Schmitz earned his bachelor's of science degree in sports management and is currently pursuing his master's degree in sports administration. |
