Each week, Bowling Green State University Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Greg Christopher answers a few of the many questions that have been submitted to BGSUFalcons.com. Here is the latest installment ...
Q: There seemed to be confusion and inconsistency with how we reported our football attendance numbers last year. How is this handled?
Steve in Toledo
A: The NCAA allows football attendance to be reported officially one of two ways: paid or actual attendance. The paid number combines all tickets sold for at least "one-third of the highest regular price" and BGSU students. The actual number is usually lower, since it is only people who come to the game.
While some schools may inflate numbers for PR purposes and then report different figures to the NCAA, our process is straightforward and is double-checked by BGSU's Internal Audit office. I expect that our paid attendance number will always be our official number because every game will have some no shows or unused tickets.
Q: I noticed on my trip to (Michigan State's) Spartan Stadium that we didn't have our band there. Was there a reason for this?
Dimes in Toledo
A: Unfortunately, the Falcon Marching Band won't make any football road trips this season. Given how the away schedule played out, visiting teams were not able to accommodate our band for a variety of reasons - space, homecoming or an alumni band performance. Somebody asked if this was a budget issue - it isn't money related, simply the dates that work for our band don't fit with plans at the other schools. We have the same issue here at BGSU if it's Homecoming weekend or if the alumni band is performing. It's too bad, because having the FMB on hand makes a difference for our team and fans!
